The 'Secularization' Process of Diné Commercial Sand Paintings and the Persistence of Religious Values

In this paper I will take a critical look at the work of Parezo whom states that a certain secularization process developed when it came to the production of commercial sand paintings in the course of the twentieth century. With the use of Inglehart and Baker (2000) I will take on a certain perspective as I aim to investigate whether certain religious connotations are still present in contemporary commercial sand paintings which have developed originally from a traditional ceremonial context. I will use several academic articles to help state my argument. On hindsight it seems that there are indeed several indications which point out that certain religious connotations do still exist in contemporary commercial products like sand paintings, but also in tapestry weavings, ceramics and baskets. Hereby I can conclude that it is not possible to declare commercial sand paintings as secular entities.
