Attributen van Etruskische mannen en vrouwen. Een comparatieve, diachronische studie

The research focused on the question how attributes of Etruscan men and women differ from each other and how time and material are involved in this. Attributes are handheld objects and can give information about the status of those who handle them. Using four categories of material (funerary tomb paintings, cippi reliefs, stone sarcophagi and Volterran urns), I have made an inventory, analyzed it and drawn conclusions. The research has shown that in the first two categories men more often have an attribute than women. The attributes of men and women differ in the sixth to fourth century B.C. only in numbers. There is no distinction in the type of attributes. From the fourth century B.C. onward, a differentiation develops as shown by lid figures of sarcophagi. Women handle attributes about as frequently as men. A difference occurs between the types of attributes: women no longer handle the same attributes as men.
