- Much research is available about foster children, but little research is done on gezinshuis placements. Therefore the present study focuses on gezinshuizen. A gezinshuis a professional fosterfamily; one of the fosterparents is a professional in youthcare, and gets a salary; there are special facilities for professional help and usually they have got a professional helper, coming in for a few hours a day. The research group consists 13 gezinshuis-children, from 9 different houses of the organisation Driestroom, their mean age is 8;2 years and the mean stay in a gezinshuis is 29 months. The six main lists of the Pedagogisch Signalerings Instrument for foster families (PSI-P) are used in interviews with the gezinshuis-parents. The subjects are: Development of gezinshuis-children, Behaviour of children in interaction with their gezinshuis-parents, Attachment- and parenting relationship between child and gezinshuis-parents and Contact with the father and mother. From these data a report will be written for the gezinshuis-parents. By qualitative and quantitative analyses the information is investigated. Most children show a positive trend since their placement in the gezinshuis, but they have many problems. In almost all areas urgent help is needed. No significant correlations were found between the different questionnaires in this group of 13 children. The current research is compared with an existing data file of 104 foster children. There are significant differences in the development, behaviour, attachment- and parenting relationships and the contacts with their father. Gezinshuis-children have far more problems in these areas and need more help and guidance from the gezinshuis-parents then foster children. This fact justifies the existence of the gezinshuizen. Further research about the problems in gezinshuizen is needed, in order to professionalize gezinshuizen and to guarantee the quality of care for children who cannot live with their parents any longer.
