Jacobs van Lennep's work "De Lotgevallen van Klaasje Zevenster" discusses several hot issues of the early eightteenth century, chief among them the lawgiving in prostitution, the importance of the closed family and the education of women. Van Lennep explicitly utilizes his authorship and the storyteller within the book to express his opinion on these subjects. I have first distinguished three levels of 'author's commentary' and then applied these levels to selected parts of the novel. Van Lennep assumes the role of the public intellectual to take the reader by the hand and see what he wants the reader to see.
