De Middelnederlandse Dido in Veldekes Eneasroman

In his Eneasroman (c. 1170-1186), Hendrik van Veldeke intentionally deviates from his main sources, the classic Aeneis from Vergil and the Old French Roman d'Eneas, in his depiction of queen Dido. This thesis analyzes this deviation through means of close reading, comparative analyses and use of the historical and cultural background of the 'renaissance of the twelfth century'. Our conclusion is that Dido's depiction as a chaotic individual, responsible for her own fate and undoing, is in line with the rise of the individual in the twelfth century and the transformation of an etiological culture into a character oriented culture, and is inteded to serve as a negative example of the consequences of immoderate love.
