- Samenvatting: In moderne klinische bronnen, de prevalentie van infectie ziekten in het oor is meestal hoger in stedelijke omgevingen, in tegenstelling tot landelijke omgevingen. Door overbevolking, slechte hygiëne en hoge mate van contact met andere mensen, kunnen infectie ziekten zich vaak gemakkelijker verspreiden in een dergelijke omgeving. De onderzoeksvraag van deze studie is: Zijn we in staat om verschillen in de prevalentie van infectie ziekten in het oor tussen het skelet populatie van een stedelijke en een landelijke site te zien? Ook zijn de population onderzocht naar welke ziekten in het oor precies geïdentificeerd kunnen worden. De skelet populaties die zijn gebruikt zijn afkomstig uit Alkmaar en Middenbeemster. De populatie uit Alkmaar is afkomstig uit de 15e en 16e eeuw, en bestaat uit 37 bruikbare skeletten. De populatie van Middenbeemster is afkomstig uit voornamelijk de 19e eeuw en bestaat uit 60 bruikbare skeletten. De gehoorbeentjes, midden oren, externe oren en mastoid processen worden onderzocht op pathologische kenmerken. In totaal zijn 18 personen uit Alkmaar en 25 personen uit Middenbeemster gevonden die hebben geleden aan een of meedere ziekten in het oor. Infectie ziekten werden het vaakst gevonden, gevolgd door gezwellen en aangeboren ziekten. In totaal werden meer infectie ziekten gevonden in Middenbeemster in tegenstelling tot Alkmaar. Er zijn geen significante verschillen in de prevalentie van infectie ziekten in het oor of algemene ziekte in het oor gevonden. Derhalve kan worden verondersteld dat leefomgeving geen invloed heeft gehad op de prevalentie van infectie ziekten in het oor en algemene ziekten in het oor in deze historische populaties. Mogelijke verklaringen voor het maskeren van deze verschillen zijn het osteologische paradox, roken, luchtvervuiling en sociaaleconomische status. Dit onderzoek toont aan dat oor ziekten kunnen worden geïdentificeerd in skelet populaties uit Nederland. Niet alleen infectieziekten, maar ook aangeboren ziekten en tumoren kunnen worden geïdentificeerd. Dit onderzoek kan een uitgangspunt voor verder onderzoek naar het oor ziekten in het algemeen en specifiek infectie ziekten in het oor.
