Master thesis | History (MA)

This MA-thesis researches to what extent the catholic identity, the regional identity and the national identity were taught to pupils in the Netherlands in the second half of the nineteenth century. Schoolbooks on Dutch history written by the catholic fraternity, the Fraters van Tilburg, are used as a case study. The thesis argues that the fraters used their history books to try to reconcile the catholic and the national identity, and that the regional identity was mainly seen as an obstacle in this attempt.
