In 1609 the Dutch Republic and the Spanish Netherlands signed a peace treaty for twelve years. In 1614 this treaty was broken by a Dutch admiral who sailed along the South American coast and through the Philippines, yet this transgression was in no way punished and received no notable attention from either the Spanish or the Dutch, who were apparently not surprised by this breach of the Truce.
