Intangible Cultural Heritage: The Protection and Preservation of Intangible Cultural Heritage

Cultural Heritage has long been the focus of historians and other interested enthusiasts, mainly focusing on Tangible Cultural Heritage: static items, such as buildings and physical objects. However, there is another kind of cultural heritage: Intangible Cultural Heritage. This type of cultural heritage is less obvious and noticeable since we are living it every day. The holidays we celebrate, the music we make, the food we know how to cook, the knowledge we pass onto the next generation: all parts of everyday life, but also all Intangible Cultural Heritage. This thesis examines the way in which this type of cultural heritage has been protected and preserved throughout the years, and what has posed a threat to the successful continuation of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This will be examined on an international scale, and will then pay extra attention to the case study of traditional Irish music: How does the literature apply to reality?
