Unveiling Equality: Islamic Feminist Perspectives of Sufi Literature

This paper examines Jalal al-Din Rumi’s parable “The Bedouin and His Wife” through a feminist lens. The aim is to challenge gender-based power dynamics and stereotypes present within Sufi literature. Grounded in a review of existing literature on Islamic feminism and its intersection with Sufism, the study contextualizes Rumi’s work in light of the broader cultural, social, and religious context in which they were produced. Through an analysis of the parable, the paper explores the roles and interactions between the characters which highlight the reinforcement and challenge of gender norms throughout the text. While Rumi’s moral of the story shows that the husband’s actions are coming from spiritual enlightenment rather than a commitment to gender equality, this paper argues that the wife’s refusal to be silenced and her assertiveness challenge gender norms, showing her agency and autonomous thinking.
