Intralingual Retranslations as a mode of accessibility: A case study of “De Wandelaar” by Adriaan van Dis.

This thesis presents a novel and original research perspective on intralingual re-translations as an accessibility tool. The literature review gives an overview of topics and debates in both literary re-translation and media accessibility. Starting with a description of the source materials and the way parallel segments are identified, this thesis presents the two frameworks used to study intralingual retranslations for lower reading levels: 1) Chesterman's translation strategies and 2) Dutch plain language guidelines. It looks at the parallels between the two and goes on to show how the easy-reading ‘Taal voor Allemaal’ guidelines primarily aimed at making informative texts more accessible to low-literacy readers and non-native readers may also be used for literary retranslations (thesis p. 45: ‘By highlighting these parallels, I emphasize the relevance of applying plain language guidelines for literary retranslations, not only informational texts.’).
