In this thesis I have examined to what extent the upper-classes of Alabam supported the Jim Crow laws during the 1950's and during the civil rights movement of the 1960's. In this thesis I have examined what role religion played in their opinion and how segregationist groups tried to maintain the Jim Crow laws. Finally, I have examined how the local newspapers of Alabama reported on the civil rights movement and the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
