Artwork in Movement across Borders: perception of an international artwork and factors of mediation

Movement of artworks across borders has become increasingly active since the 1980s, fueled by the idea of the creative industry. The creative industry is the economic business model of understanding art and culture as some of the important forces of the economic growth of a region. This approach toward art shapes and changes institutional practice, which in turn can affect how the work is presented and perceived. With the reconsidered reception theory as a methodology, this thesis aims to identify mediating factors that determine the audience’s perception of an international artwork in the age of neoliberalism and globalisation. The work Factory Complex directed by Im Heung-Soon is used as a case study. Through identifying the key features of the work which have been differently mediated by each institution, two exhibitions which hosted the work, Asia NowParis Asian Art Fair in Paris(Fr) and En Otro País1 at El Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires(Arg), will be analysed here.
