The Gregory-Laflamme Instability in Anti-de Sitter Space

In flat space, it is known that black strings, five-dimensional generalisations of black holes, are classically unstable. In this thesis, a previously introduced method to formally prove this Gregory-Laflamme instability is adapted to investigate stability of asymptotically AdS_4 black strings in five-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. It is verified that such black strings are unstable if the size of their event horizon is small compared to the radius of curvature of the underlying AdS_4 space, slightly improving the known bound of instability. Furthermore, evidence is given that black strings are stable if the size of the event horizon is at least of the order of the AdS_4 curvature.
