The current study examined the effects of pop-up notifications on the inconsistency effect, investigating to what extent participants were able to remember information from the text when they were distracted by a pop-up notification. It was also examined to what extent the possible effect of the pop-up notifications differed for participants with an above-average degree of social media use and for participants with an average degree of social media use. In addition, it was investigated whether pop-up notifications influence the reading comprehension of participants. These research questions were investigated through an experiment. During reading, the reading times per sentence were measured to find out whether the readers noticed the inconsistency and whether they were distracted by the pop-up notification. The results showed that the pop-up notifications had no effect on the availability of information earlier in the text and that regardless of the pop-up notification, there was an inconsistency effect, with reading times for the target sentence in the inconsistent text being longer than reading times for the target sentence in the consistent text. In addition, there was no significant difference between the group with an above-average level of social media use and the group with an average level of social media use. Furthermore, the pop-up notification did not significantly affect reading comprehension.
