Animating Power: Tactility and Metaphor in Jiri Trnka’s The Hand

Grounded in the medium of stop-motion animation’s unique characteristics, this paper explores the intersection between tactility, film, and politics with a particular focus on Jiří Trnka’s The Hand (1965). Considered his best work, this Czech short stop-motion animation offers a great space for the exploration of the significance of materiality. Drawing on theories from sensory and film studies, the paper examines how film images can evoke the sense of touch. Through a multidisciplinary approach, it makes use of posthumanist theories to discuss how the film’s tactile aspect contributes to its political significance, illustrating the power relations of the totalitarian regime in Czechoslovakia at the time.
