Objective: Over the years, concern about the mental wellbeing of children and adolescents has been growing worldwide, including in the Netherlands. Reduced wellbeing is a major cause of health problems. There are several factors that can contribute to the growth of mental health problems. One such factor is the increasing stress that children experience through and at school. Stressful events at an early age can contribute to mental health problems and physical illnesses. The present study investigated whether there is a difference in general stress level and stressors between children of group 7 and group 8. Results: A difference was found in general stress level and school-related stress between children of group 7 and 8. Children of group 8 have higher general stress level and experience more school-related stress than children of group 7. No significant differences were found for parent- and peer-related stress between children of group 7 and group 8. Conclusion: The results show the importance of early identification of general stress level and school-related stress and using interventions on reducing them. Implementing interventions can contribute to the development of coping strategies that increase resilience and reduce the negative impact of stress. It is important that interventions specifically focus on reducing general stress level and school- related stress and are only used in group 8 for children experiencing stress. This is necessary because children can only apply knowledge and skills learnt during the interventions after experiencing some stress.Show less
