The distribution patterns of Byzantine Amphorae of the North Syrian type in the Middle East during Late Antiquity (5th-8th centuries)

This report is a study of the North Syrian Amphorae, found in archaeological sites located along the Euphrates River. This thesis has two objectives: first to determine the origins and distribution patterns of this amphorae type; and second to create a database of already existing vessels of this type that were available from Archaeology’s Department depot of the Leiden University. The first part is focused on the general characteristics of the North Syrian Amphorae, and the categorization of two subgroups: the North Syrian Amphora 1 (NSA1) and the North Syrian Amphora 2 (NSA2). It has been possible studying existing bibliography and excavation reports where North Syrian Amphorae were discovered. The second part featured the process of creating the database and catalogue, as well as specific information about the excavations where the amphorae of the depot came from.
