Speaking the Same Language: Analysing the Impact of Language Requirements on Migration Flows

This thesis investigates the impact of language requirements on migration flows into the European Union (EU). The primary focus is on whether stricter language requirements deter immigrants. Amid rising anti-immigrant sentiment and persistent labour shortages in many European countries, understanding the determinants of migration is crucial for effective policymaking. Using panel data analysis, this study explores the overall relationship between language requirements and migration inflows. A sub-question addresses the differential effects on EU citizens compared to third-country nationals (TCNs). The research finds no significant overall relationship between language requirements and migration inflows, suggesting that other factors may play more critical roles.
