Using Adaptive Reuse in the Harbouring of Industrial Heritage in Gothenburg

This thesis explores how Gothenburg, Sweden, integrates industrial and natural heritage into urban planning. Founded in 1621, Gothenburg grew from a maritime trading hub into an industrial powerhouse known for shipbuilding and automotive manufacturing. However, deindustrialization in the late 20th century led to economic and social challenges, leaving the city to redefine itself. Today, Gothenburg aims to balance its industrial heritage with sustainability, inclusivity, and resilience as outlined in its Vision 2030 framework. The study argues that adaptive reuse is more effective than strict preservation for making industrial heritage relevant in modern urban contexts.
