Bones of the fort - Msc thesis Jip van Es: A Deep Dive into the Faunal Remains of Castellum Hoge Woerd.

Abstract This thesis titled ‘Bones of the Fort: A Deep Dive into the Faunal Remains of Castellum Hoge Woerd’ describes the exploitation patterns and animal use at the Roman fort. This research has aimed to give insights and a better understanding of the food supply and consumption of the Roman army that was stationed at this archaeological site. This research seeks to animal exploitation patterns and food supply strategies of the Hoge Woerd fort itself but also in the direct region. It also analyzes consumption activities and signs of secondary uses of the animals or animal remains. The archaeozoological data reveals the importance of the three main ungulates as a part of the diet of the inhabitants of the fort. It shows a predominance of cattle with almost 43% of the analyzed remains, followed by pigs with 8%, and finally sheep/goat with 7.5%. The taphonomical marks indicate that the animals were primarily used for consumption, but also were used for secondary products. Additionally, the thesis discusses the differences and similarities in archaeozoological data between Castellum Hoge Woerd and other military settlements along the Lower Germanic Limes. The exploitation patterns of Hoge Woerd show similar reliance on domestic animals for food, dairy products, and labor, which aligns with other Roman military settlements. The thesis will contribute to the proceeding project called Romeins fort aan de Rijn. ‘Uitwerking en publicatie Castellum Hoge Woerd,' providing an overview of the archaeological finds in trying to offer a better understanding of the Roman military life and exploitation practices.Show less
