The Verbalisation of Present-Day English Loanwords in Dutch and Hungarian

More and more English words are borrowed into European languages and these words can be used as verbs. For this thesis, two questionnaires were utilised to examine the verbalisation methods that Dutch and Hungarian native speakers employ most frequently to verbalise English loanwords and to examine whether these verbalisation methods are related to socio-demographic variables. The results show much more variability than expected based on the theoretical propositions (Haas & Trommelen, 1993; Kiefer, 2000). This variation demonstrates that the rules, as presented by the theory, are less simplex in practice. The variation in employed verbalisation methods might be explained by some socio-demographic variables, because variation has been found for the variables age, English level and knowledge of other languages.
