Phonology of Chorei, A Tibeto-Burman Language of Northeast India

Chorei is a language spoken in a small area in the border region between the states of Tripura, Assam and Mizoram in North-East India. It belongs to the South-Central branch, a.k.a. “Kuki-Chin” or “Kukish”, of the Trans-Himalayan family, a.k.a. “Sino-Tibetan”, of which “Tibeto-Burman” is either a synonym or a primary branch. This thesis provides a well-argued and well-evidenced description of Chorei phonology with links to archived audio recordings. The thesis describes the segmental phonology of Chorei as well as provides information on stress and (phonological and morphological) word structures. Tones were found to be absent in Chorei. Although this work failed to resolve all questions around Chorei phonology, future research is expected to benefit from their clear formulation and proposals on how such questions may be answered.
