Eyes on the prize: Dutch Privateering in New Netherland

This thesis examined Dutch privateering practices in the Dutch North American colony of New Netherland during the seventeenth century. It addresses how privateering became the most important maritime weapon for the Dutch Republic in its war against Spain and how the Dutch used this strategy in their expansion into the Atlantic. Despite being a relatively regulated practice, this research demonstrates that the inhabitants of New Netherland had their own interpretation of these rules.
