This study examined the relationship between childhood experiences of maltreatment and parenting stress in new fathers. Prior research has shown that parents with a history of maltreatment report higher levels of parenting stress, but most of these studies focus solely on mothers. This research aimed to investigate if this relationship also applies to fathers and whether two diﬀerent types of childhood maltreatment, neglect and abuse, have a diﬀerential relation with parenting stress. Secondly, the results showed that only childhood neglect was a significant predictor of parenting stress (β = .31, p <.001), and that childhood abuse was not (β = -.12, p = .16). Lastly, the age of the child did not moderate the relationship between childhood maltreatment and parenting stress (p = .76), indicating that the strength of this relationship is independent of the child’s age. These findings suggest that fathers with a history of neglect are more vulnerable to stress in their own parenting. This study highlights the importance of early detection of childhood trauma in expectant fathers. Trauma-informed intervention may reduce parenting stress and the risk of the intergenerational transmission of maltreatment. Further research should focus on exploring underlying mechanisms that can explain the relationship between childhood neglect and parenting stress.Show less
