Identity as a an L2 Japanese speaker: dialects as medium to legitimize oneself to L1 speakers

This thesis discusses how L2 speakers of Japanese use dialect to assert themselves into communities when living in Japan. Interviews with both L1 speakers and L2 speakers of Japanese allowed for a comparison between how both groups use their dialect. The resulats show clearly that whereas L1 speakers use their dialect to create borders, dialect use by L2 speakers allows for the circumvention of this barrier.
