After "Made in China": From Copycat to Creator: Innovation Recognition and Media Framing of Chinese AI in Western Journalism

This thesis examines how Anglophone news media frame China’s AI rise (2000–2025), focusing on the shift from “Made in China” to “Created in China.” It uses a multi-outlet corpus and mixed methods—computational text analysis plus qualitative coding—and introduces the Innovation Acknowledgement Ratio (IAR) to quantify innovation recognition by comparing frames across ideological leanings and maps recurring narratives.
