Print and Prejudice: An Analysis of the Portrayal of Muslim-Related Issues in South Korean Newspapers

This thesis aims to analyze the portrayal of Muslim-related issues in the South Korean newspapers Chosun Ilbo, Joongang Ilbo and Hankyoreh. It focuses on two cases: the influx of Yemeni refugees on Jeju Island in 2018, and the construction of a mosque in Daegu, which began in 2020 but has been ongoing due to various factors that prevented it. Articles from the newspapers have been selected, analyzed, categorized as positive, neutral and negative in their portrayal. The findings show that the Chosun Ilbo tends towards an objective stance in portraying the cases, characterized by a focus on facts and a lack of person-based narratives. The Joongang Ilbo brings a more balanced view, and includes facts and descriptions of firsthand experiences. the Hankyoreh shows an overall unique approach, presented through an active stance to dismantle prejudices and inclusion of various stories of those involved.
