Ink and Empire: The Impact of Political Decisions on Calligraphers during Dynastic Changes of the Song and Yuan dynasties and Ming and Qing dynasties

In this thesis, several calligraphers will be examined who experienced dynastic transitions between the Song (960-1279) and Yuan (1644–1911), as well as the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties. This paper focuses on how these calligraphers’ political decisions—either remaining loyal to the former regime or surrendering to the new one—affected their reputations as artists. Furthermore, the aim of this paper is to explore whether and how their political choices influenced the perceptions of their artistic work. Additionally, it will consider the broader context of their lives, going beyond their artistic output to reflect on the perceptions and reactions of their contemporaries and later generations
