Pixels and Patriarchy: Exploring Female Character Archetypes in Naraka: Bladepoint through Hostile and Benevolent Sexism

This thesis explores the intersection of gender dynamics and digital spaces in the context of Chinese video games, focusing on the game Naraka: Bladepoint. Through an analysis of female character archetypes, the thesis examines how hostile and benevolent sexism manifest in the virtual representations of women. The archetypes of the Temptress and the Maiden are scrutinized to understand how these characters are designed to cater to a predominantly heterosexual male audience. The thesis highlights the broader implications of these virtual representations on real-life gender perceptions and societal norms in China. By delving into the cultural and historical contexts of these archetypes, the thesis sheds light on the ongoing dialogue about gender equality in Chinese gaming spheres.
