Women’s Self-Expression: Through the Lens of Women’s Work (Nügong) During Late Imperial China

In late imperial China, the place and role of women in society were mainly dictated by Confucian gender ideals. Women were expected to take care of matters within the household, such as childcare and cooking, but at the same time were expected to contribute to society by performing what was considered to be ‘women's work’. This research attempts to obtain a better understanding of how women in late imperial China could use women's work as a form of personal self-expression and what personal interests, beliefs, and identities can be observed from the objects that they made.
