Conservative Christian Organisations and Anti-LGBT+ Protest Tactics in Contemporary South Korea: A Case Study on the Seoul Queer Culture Festival

This thesis investigates the protest tactics employed by conservative Christian organisations (CCO) at the Seoul Queer Culture Festival (SQCF) in South Korea from 2000 to 2023. It makes use of a qualitative textual and visual analysis of a total of 28 newspapers collected from South Korean news websites online. It finds that these CCO make use of multiple different protest tactics at the SQCF, including protest tactics of language; protest tactics of coercion; protest tactics of disruption; and protest tactics of tradition. Furthermore, this thesis finds that there have been multiple different continuities and discontinuities within the protest tactics used by CCO at the SQCF. Through this research, this thesis contributes to the growing body of literature on CCO more generally and South Korea’s political landscape, while placing these developments in the context of South Korea’s constantly shifting neoliberal society.
