A lot of research has shown that out-of-home placement is bad for the emotional development of children. Far less is known about predictors of the length of out-of-home placements. This thesis analyzes the relationship between various risk factors at the level of both family and mothers, and the length of out-of-home placement. The risk factors were teenage motherhood, concerns about the social network of the mother, financial problems, psychological difficulties of the mother and cumulation of risk factors. Also the moderation effect of gender on these various risk factors was analyzed. Case files (N = 319) of children aged zero-18 years were analyzed. ANOVAs showed no significant main effect for teenage motherhood, concerns about the social network of the mothers and financial problems. The duration of the out-of-home placement was longer for boys. Multiple regression analysis showed a significant main effect for a cumulation of risk factors and a significant interaction effect between gender and cumulation of risk factors in relation to the length of out-of-home placements. A cumulation of risk factors is related to a longer out-of-home placement, primarily for boys. In conclusion, this research shows that the length of out-of-home placement is not only determined by the situation of the child, but also by family conditions such as concerns about the social network of the mothers, financial problems and psychological difficulties of the mother. Concerns about the social network and financial problems are moderated by gender. Interventions should focus on both child factors and family conditions.Show less
