Simulation of tunable couplers for integrated quantum acoustics: Connecting superconducting qubits and phononic cavities

In this thesis I simulate two different tunable coupler designs, inductive and capacitive, to connect a superconducting qubit to a piezo-driven phononic wave guide. Phonons, the quanta of mechanical excitations, have been shown to be versatile tools for a variety of uses. They have been useful as intermediaries in hybrid quantum systems and for the distribution and storage of quantum information. We want to connect a superconducting qubit to a piezo element and a phononic cavity to efficiently excite and detect phononic states. For this a tunable coupler with coupling strengths of the order of of several MHz is needed. I simulate two designs based on an inductance-tunable RF SQUID and on direct capacitive coupling and evaluate their usefulness for our application.
