Where biology meets culture. A study of Bolivia's artificial cranial modification during the Tiwanaku period

- El ser humano se adopta. No solamente nos adoptamos al medio ambiente , si no también nos adoptamos al entorno en si, como para nuestras necesidades, deseos e ideas. Esta necesidad para cambiar no parra solamente con el entorno. El cuerpo humano se usa muchas veces como lienzo para expresar quienes somos y donde expresamos nuestra identidad. Esta tesis discuta un tipo de esta expresion de identidad: modificaciones artificiales craneales (muchas veces abreviado como “ACM” siglas en ingles). Como la modificación solo se pudo hacer con éxito en individuos menor de tres años, no expresa la identidad individual pero como un grupo de identidad a quienes sus padres pertenecieron. Esto hace que la modificacion craneal es un área de investigación muy interesante, cual puede indicar al arqueólogo muchas cosas sobre poblaciones pasadas. Las dos poblaciones que estudie para esta tesis son originados de los Andes de Bolivia; una área con un porcentaje alto con cráneos modificados pero con un porcentaje minimo de investigación. El propósito de este trabajo es para agregar la información de las modificaciones craneales en los Andes de Bolivia, cual se hizo a base de un estudio de 60 craneos principalmente Tiwanaku-era (500 – 1000 CE) de dos regiones andinas diferentes: el Altiplano, y los Valles de Cochabamba. Los Valles de Cochabamba, aunque emulando la cultura Tiwanaku, se quedaron muy independientes, un factor cual se ha confirmado con los resultados de esta tesis. La diferencia mas llamativa ha sido la influencia del sexo en las presentes modificaciones, cual se encontró estadisticamente mas significado en los ejemplares de los valles y no en los cráneos del Altiplano. Tambien se encontraron otras diferencias: la modificación anular es mas frecuente en el Altiplano, y tabular es mas popular en los Valles. Los modos cilíndricas anulares son mayormente de los Valles aunque la variante en forma cónica es mas común en el Altiplano. Las modificaciones curvo-occipitales tabulares solo ocurren en los Altiplanos, con la variante plano-lámbdica mas común. Modificaciones tabulares curvo-frontales, entonces, solo ocurrieron en los Valles. Y de ultimo, modificaciones erectos acontecieron relativamente mas en las muestras del Altiplano, donde compensa la mitad de los subtipos tabulares , a cambio que en los Valles. Tambien se ha estudiado efectos osteologicas de ACM en el craneo. Estos resultados regionales no han indicado, exhibiendo que aparte de todas las diferencias culturales, que la población no era muy diferente entre ellos mismos. Los rasgos no métricos, cuales parecen tener influencia por la modificación craneal en la colección, son extendido de la infra orbital foramen izquierda, el puente pterygo-spinosa derecho and el dehiscencia timpánica izquierdo, también como la retención de sutura metopica. Los resultados dan de conocer que casi toda la población vivía cerca, y estaban en contacto con cada uno, y diferencias regionales de culturas si existían. Extrapolando descubrimientos de la cultura de Tiwanaku en el Altiplano con el resto de los Andes Bolivianos de este modo no son correcto, cuales deberían se deberían tomar en mente para futuras (muy necesario) investigaciones en esta área.
