Surviving, Negotiating, Resisting: John Horse’s Leadership of the Black Seminoles in the Nineteenth Century

Master thesis | North American Studies (MA)

This research focuses on the interethnic alliance between Seminole Native Americans and 'freed' African Americans and their struggles for freedom, sovereignty and peace in the nineteenth century. This research is done through the lens of the most prolific leader of this community: John Horse. The research analyses his leadership of the Black Seminoles through a theoretical framework based on settler colonialism, double identity and U.S. expansionism.
