The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration: Tracing the drivers of politicization in the Dutch parliament

Why do some international agreements get a lot of political attention in parlement and what is the influence of the domestic political context in the amount of attention an issue gets? This research focuses on the politicization of an international agreement and examines whether this was elite-driven through explaining outcome process tracing. The aim of this research is to answer the question why the Global Compact for Migration became highly politicized in the Netherlands in 2018. The study is situated in the agenda-setting literature and uses process tracing to answer whether politicization is elite-led and if media or citizen pressure served as a catalyst. The result of this study suggests limited support for the idea that politicization in this case study is elite driven by a party with high political utility, but further research is needed to determine whether the hypothesis could be confirmed.
