Acting Together under Power.: Effects of Autonomy and Influence on Self-Other Integration in the Joint Simon Task

This study investigates how autonomy and influence, two dimensions of power, affect self-other integration in joint action. This distinction is valuable, because treating power as a single construct may conceal opposing effects and it provides insights into coordination in non-hierarchical teams. Based on theories suggesting that power increases self-focus and psychological distance, whereas interdependence enhances self- other integration, it was hypothesized that high (vs. low) autonomy would reduce self- other integration, high (vs. low) influence would enhance it and that influence would buffer the effect of high autonomy. In the 2 × 2 between-subjects factorial design, autonomy and influence were manipulated during the Joint Simon Task. Although a robust Joint Simon Effect was found, no significant main or interaction effects of autonomy and influence were observed.
