This study investigated the role of environmental factors in predicting problematic smartphone use. Problematic smartphone use has to be reduced, as it has been shown to have many negative consequences. This includes anxiety, poor mental well-being, high costs, and low self esteem. Fifty female bachelor's students in social sciences and humanities participated in the study. The participants completed various questionnaires at the university building about topics such as their problematic smartphone use, academic well-being, digital stress, and digital upbringing. The data from the questionnaires is used in this study. The results showed that digital stress and academic well-being are important predictors of problematic smartphone use. In addition, the age at which someone first owned a phone did not prove to be a significant predictor of problematic smartphone use. A smartphone ban on schools also did not appear to make any difference in the extent of problematic smartphone use among young people.
