There are many factors that influence internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems in children, one of which is maternal experiences with child abuse. Within this context less is known about what the effect is of the number of children within a family dyad on possible child outcomes due to maternal experiences with child abuse. This study examined (1) the relation between maternal experiences with child abuse and their children’s internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems, and (2) whether the number of children in a family dyad moderated this relation. The number of children within a family dyad was derived from a demographic questionnaire completed by the mothers. Results showed no significant relations between maternal experiences with child abuse and children’s internalizing and externalizing behavior. The number of children within a family also did not moderate this association. These results might suggest that children’s internalizing and externalizing behavior might go beyond maternal experiences with abuse and the number of children within a family. This underlines the importance of additional research into risk factors and protective factors so that future interventions may take these into account.Show less
