Introduction: The use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) chatbots among students has increased substantially. This technology offers potential benefits, such as learning assistance and increasing efficiency, however it also raises concerns regarding overreliance and ethical use. This study examines the relationship between students’ attitudes toward GenAI and their self-reported use of GenAI, with perceived competence as a mediator and educational level (secondary, vocational and higher education) as a moderator. Results: A positive association between the attitude towards GenAI and the use of GenAI was found. Perceived competence significantly predicted GenAI use and partially mediated the relationship between attitude and use. Educational level did not significantly moderate the mediation model. Discussion: It can be concluded that both attitude and perceived competence play a role in explaining students’ use of GenAI, while competence does not fully account for this relationship. This suggests that additional factors besides competence, such as perceived usefulness or trust in GenAI, could also contribute to students’ use of GenAI. This indicates the need for a broader application of technology acceptance models for GenAI. Educational institutions could help students by providing informed attitudes toward GenAI and perceived competence in its use.Show less
