A tailord Worksite Health Intervention in a Healtcare setting: Effects on Lifestyle, Well-ebing and Work Engagement

This study evaluates the Vitality Box, a workplace health and lifestyle intervention implemented at the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). The programme offers coaching, e-learning modules and a the use of a smartwatch. The aim is to examine the impact on lifestyle, well-being and work engagement, and to determine whether improvements are associated with use of components. A pretest-posttest design without a control group was used. Participants (N = 151) completed questionnaires assessing lifestyle (PPPQ), well-being (WHO-5) and work engagement (UWES). The intervention duration was between 8-16 weeks. One-sample t-tests evaluated perceived lifestyle improvements, and paired-sample t-tests assessed changes in well-being and work engagement. Post-intervention questionnaires provided insight into participants' experiences. Results showed a significant improvement in overall lifestyle (p < .001, d = 1.38). Well-being also increased significantly (p < .001, d = 0.68). Work engagement improved significantly, although the effect size was small (p = .020, d = 0.19). Improvements in lifestyle significantly predicted improvements in well-being and work engagement. However, use of coaching, e-learning modules, and the smartwatch did not significantly predict outcomes. Engagement with e-learning was low, with 59% of participants not completing any modules. In conclusion, the Vitality Box supports improvements in lifestyle and well-being, with smaller gains in work engagement. Limited engagement with e-learning may have reduced its impact. Although causal conclusions cannot be drawn due to the lack of a control group, the findings highlight the potential of workplace lifestyle interventions and the importance of improving participant engagement in future research.Show less
