This thesis is an analysis of Knickerbocker's interpretation of Shen Jiji's tale 'Record Within a Pillow'. This thesis seeks to investigate whether or not 'Record Within a Pillow' was written in order to warn others of the dangers of government officialdom, and in how far writing this story may have had a cathartic effect on Shen Jiji.
