Desire of the Flesh: Contemporary feminist reading of Raw and the issues of viewing positions and depiction of budding female sexuality.

Just as the shift of old feminism to new feminism entails a shift from a psychoanalytical to a phenomenological approach, Raw shifts in its subject matter and approach towards these new stances. It comments on the patriarchal order, inclusiveness (or lack thereof in early feminism) and submissiveness to the male gaze. According to a phenomenological understanding, the audience will note these deviations because they are now seen as active and embodied spectators but also through their previous experiences with the generic tropes.

This thesis focusses on a new feminist film critique with a close reading of the horror film Raw. The implications of this genre and the spectator position associated with it pay a key role in coming to a revised feminist reading of the work.
