Strategic or Sectarian? Factionalist Roots of Iran's Foreign Policy Paradox
- Author
- Tusch, Florian
- Note
- The thesis has conceptual problems as well as problems of clarity. For instance, the attempt to define Khomeinism as its own sect distinct of the Shi'a is fellacious. Furthermore, the case studies are shallow, making the thesis "top-heavy" and leading to the argument not convincing. The general argument, however, stands: First, viewing Iran's foreign policy as unitary is problematic, since institutions can be shown to act oppositional to each other. Second, sectarianism in the case of Iran is not sufficiently explained through a purely confessional Shi'a/Sunni lens, since this does not adequately adress the universalist claims and internalization of modern political thought in Khomeinist doctrine.
