JAPAN'S VACANT HOUSES PROBLEM - How can we explain the increase in vacant houses in Japan?

- Note
- Japans population which at this moment consists of 127 million people is forecasted to shrink by about one third in the next five decades, and the proportion of people who are over 64 years old will be reaching about 38 percent in that same timeframe. When the elderly population will eventually move to an elderly care facility or pass away, the houses in which they used to live in will become vacant and lose their purposes. Because of the shrinking population, these vacant houses are increasing rapidly. The media also often portraits the cause of the vacancy increase in this way. However, I believe that this rise should not be solely explained by an aging and shrinking population of Japan. The purpose of this thesis is to help my reader understand that this increase has more underlying factors than just a declining population, as is often given as a reason by the media and government. In this thesis, the main research area is about what causes vacant housing in Japan. My research will be focused on providing an overview and explaining possible causes and conditions which have led to an increase in vacant housing in Japan. The available literature on specifically the causes of vacant homes in Japan, in particular, those written in English, are quite scarce. For that reason, it is significant to notice that there is a lack of research conducted on this topic. Therefore, I hope my thesis will shed some light on this phenomenon.
