De reden waarom ik mij dit afvroeg was het verschil in kerken in het Christendom. Om dit onderzoek uit te kunnen voeren heb ik mij eerst moeten richten op Mithras zelf: waar deze god vandaan kwam en wie hem vereerden. Mithras is een oosterse god die al vroeg vereerd werd door volkeren in het Nabije-Oosten waaronder de Perzen. Na eerst in een pantheon van goden te hebben gezeten werd Mithras onder het zoroastrisme een van de goede helpers van Ahura Mazda. Al snel kreeg Mithras een eigen verering en werd hij in de Hellenistische tijd geïdentificeerd met Helios en Apollo. Hoogstwaarschijnlijk is de cultus via oosterse legeronderdelen in het Romeinse leger verspreid geraakt in de Romeinse wereld. Het leger en handelslieden namen de cultus aan en namen hem met zich mee. In de bouw van een mithraeum worden er vaste regels nagestreefd: Het mithraeum moet een grot voorstellen, maar wel in de context van de kosmos. Het is vaak een rechthoekige ruimte met aan de lange zijden aanligbedden met aan het hoofd daarvan een cultus reliëf of beeld. Deze regels werden ook nageleefd in het Rijngebied en in Romeins Britannië. Het grootse verschil tussen deze twee regio’s waren de inscripties aangetroffen bij de mithraea. In Romeins Britannië betrof het veel vaker een inscriptie in militaire context dan in Germania Inferior. Dit zou betekenen dat als er verschil is tussen de regio’s, het verschil niet in de bouw maar in een andere context gezocht moet worden.Show less

De site werd al bewoond voor de Romeinse expansie op het Iberisch schiereiland en kent een Iberische en Phoenicische oorsprong. Het huidige aanzicht van de site wordt gekenmerkt door bebouwing uit de late 1e en 2e eeuw n.Chr. Baelo Claudia heeft een aantal typische Romeinse voorzieningen die passen bij een plaats met de status van een municipium. Het zijn echter de opvallende factoren die deze plaats zo interessant maken voor archeologisch onderzoek. Baelo Claudia lijkt grotendeels afhankelijk te zijn van de seizoensvisserij en heeft een goed bewaard gebleven industrieel terrein waar met name vis werd gezout en garum werd gemaakt. De voorzieningen op de site zelf lijken echter buiten proportioneel in verhouding met het geschatte aantal inwoners, iets wat mogelijk op seizoensarbeid wijst. In deze thesis is op verschillende manieren naar de site gekeken, om Baelo Claudia in een historisch en regionale context te plaatsen. Hiervoor is gebruik gemaakt van verschillende bestaande theorieën omtrent Romanisatie, urbanisatie, migratie en economie. Hierdoor is aan het licht gekomen dat Baelo Claudia een vrij dynamische geschiedenis heeft gekend die zich niet makkelijk door een enkele factor laat verklaren. De site heeft zeer verschillende karakters gehad onder de Romeinse republiek en het Romeinse keizerrijk, waar met name de economische en politieke factoren een grote rol hebben gespeeld. Onder de Romeinse republiek lijkt Baelo Claudia een zeer bescheiden economische rol te hebben gespeeld, waarbij de site waarschijnlijk door zijn geïsoleerde positie in het Spaanse landschap meer Mauretanisch was georiënteerd dan Romeins. Numismatiek onderzoek heeft uitgewezen dat Baelo Claudia nog lang het Phoenicische alfabet op munten gebruikte. Terwijl andere plaatsen in Baetica al waren overgestapt op het Latijnse alfabet. Vissausen werden in de regio van Baelo Claudia al vanaf de 6e eeuw v.Chr. geproduceerd voor een beperkte markt en vervoerd in lokaal aardewerk. Het is bekend dat in de late 1e eeuw v.Chr. Koning Juba II de productie van garum bevorderde, niet alleen als handelswaar maar ook in de vorm van belasting voor Rome. Studies naar amforen die werden gebruikt voor het vervoer van garum wijzen uit dat er in de 1e eeuw n.Chr. een sterke toename is van de Romeinse vraag naar dit luxe artikel. Iets wat in met combinatie van de verwerving van de status van municipium de monumentalisatie en de standaardisatie van het productieproces hebben beïnvloed. De productie moet hebben gezorgd voor een toename van werkgelegenheid, iets wat ook waarneembaar is in Mauretania. Hoe die seizoensarbeid werd georganiseerd is nog steeds onduidelijk, maar de expertise die nodig zijn om tonijn te vangen had niet iedereen voor handen. Een meer regionale samenwerking van vissers en productiecentra zou niet onlogisch zijn, hier is echter maar zeer beperkt bewijs voor. Handboeken over Iberische archeologie zullen Baelo Claudia vaak onderdelen bij sites als Italica en Gades, terwijl dit onrecht doet aan de feitelijke context van Baelo Claudia. De Mauretanische kust en de stad Tingi liggen namelijk veel dichterbij en kunnen ons meer vertellen over de regionale economie en de politieke situatie rond de Straat van Gibraltar. Politieke besluitvorming aan één kust beïnvloedde (in)direct ook de situatie aan de andere kant. En ook op het economische vlak blijken sites aan beide kanten van de Straat van Gibraltar dezelfde set visproducten te produceren voor de Romeinse markt. Waar de archeologie zich vaak primair toespitst op Iberische of Mauretanische archeologie, wordt vaak de feitelijke regionale context uit het oog verloren. De thesis nodigt ook uit tot verder onderzoek naar de relatie tussen de twee kanten van de Straat van Gibraltar.Show less

The buccolingual diameter, mesiodistal diameter, crown height and total length of the canines of 74 individuals were measured, as well as the maxilla-alveolar breadth and length. The sex of the specimen was known through earlier performed ancient DNA analysis. The measurements were analyzed in graphs and Student’s T Tests were performed. It was found that even though the maxillo-alveolar breadth and length did not show any significant differences between males and females, the buccolingual and mesiodistal diameter as well as the root length did show a significant difference. Sexual dimorphism in the dentins is an interesting topic and has been studied by several researchers. Most of these researchers find some sort of dimorphism between males and females. The amount of dimorphism, however, varies per population. To use the canines, or dentins in general, as a sex indicator the analysis has to be compared and verified by a different standard method of sex determination. This study confirms those findings.Show less

There are an estimated 200 sites on land and 200...Show moreThe Caribbean island St. Eustatius is an archaeologist’s dream. It has the greatest concentration of archaeological sites in the New World. There are an estimated 200 sites on land and 200 shipwrecks in the waters surrounding the island. One of the reasons for this is that the island played a major role in world history in the late eighteenth century. The sovereignty of the United States was first recognized here on November 16, 1776. People from all over the world came to St. Eustatius to make money by trading. As a result, one can find artifacts these people left behind on almost every square meter, on land and under water. One of these types of artifacts are buckles, objects that were regarded as articles of high fashion in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In this thesis a collection of 55 buckles, that was found in Oranje Bay in the early 1990’s, are investigated. To present a complete picture, their historical context is examined as well. As will be shown, the buckles can be regarded as indicators of the ups and downs of the islands economy and the people who participated in it.Show less

Since then everywhere in the world this phenomenon is mentioned. When we look at the contemporary societies of the South American mainland shamanism is part of their daily life as their world is animated. The function of the shaman is to be a mediator between the society and the spirits, reaching a trance state by using hallucinogenic substances. Not only in South American Tropical Forest societies is this the case, but also in the Siberian Arctic region. Shamanism is not a restricted phenomenon, but a widespread one. Without his tools the shaman can not contact the spirits. Tropical forest shamans use for example maracas, benches, snuffing tubes, snuffing trays and idols. They have their counterparts in the archaeological record where since the migration of the Saladoid and Huecoid peoples into the Caribbean islands shamanistic paraphernalia are found like, three-pointers, rattles, nostril bowls, snuffing tubes, snuff plateaus, and incense burners. These categories were also available among the Taíno as shamanism was also part of their society. Rattles, benches, snuffing tubes, special cohoba vessels, ceremonial pestles, vomiting spatulas, and cohoba stands were used. The egalitarian Saladoid society changed into a stratified society of the Taíno. Shamanism was not restricted anymore to the shaman or behique, but also the cacique used shamanistic paraphernalia and cohoba.Show less

He became very interested in the peoples he...Show moreThe Taíno peoples were discovered by Columbus in 1492, although for a long time he thought to have arrived at the islands surrounding the Japanese coast. He became very interested in the peoples he met and ordered Fray Ramón Pané to live among the people of two caciques. As a result one of the most important reports were written about the Taíno and the first ethnological work in the Americas. This work knows a history of many problems. These started during the writing period and ended with the disappearance of the original manuscript, after Fernando Columbus handled it. The term Taíno is used for almost all cultures found on the Greater Antilles, the Bahamas and a couple of the Lesser Antilles. However, this term, Taíno, should be used with great care. The area is not as homogeneous as first thought. There are differences is language, religion practices and sociopolitical structures and as of yet no element has found that characterizes this area as a whole. This term can be regarded as similar to the term Europe, a certain landmass that possesses several distinct cultural groups. The word Taíno is used here for the two communities in which Pané resided for a couple of years and where he wrote his reports. The Taíno were a society that showed great creativity and energy, they were the most developed in the Caribbean region. They had complex chiefdoms and lived in a hierarchical society. Their religion had evolved as well. Among others Pané wrote about the myths of the Taíno. Stevens-Arroyo has ordered these stories into two groups, creation myths and hero myths. All of these have larger themes and smaller elements in them, important for the community that acts and reacts on them. These themes will be compared to myths found on the mainland of South America to find out where the Taíno, according to the myths, could have originated from.Show less

The Spanish Conquistadores have documented many rituals in which victims are described to have been decapitated after their still pumping hearts were ripped out of their chests. Being described as cruel acts of the Devil, sacrifice was not tolerated among the Europeans and caused a lot of commotion and highly exaggerated cases on which people tended to rely completely since there are no real Aztec primary sources. While so many things have been written about these ceremonies and the personality of the Aztecs themselves, one starts to wonder what really happened during Aztec reign since these Spanish texts seemed to be highly biased with the influence of Christianity. This was what researchers started to wonder a few decades ago when another perspective on the matter kicked in. Anthropologists started to view things in their own perspective, using the Aztec world view as their guideline. The Aztecs shared this great belief in their pantheon of gods and the fact that their deities had sacrificed themselves in order to create the fifth sun in which the Aztecs lived. In order to pay of their debts to the gods, the Aztecs sacrificed impersonators of their deity to show that they were willing to give up the most precious thing, namely the human body. To be able to state if this is really the best way to analyze human sacrifice and to be able to state that this really happened, archaeological evidence has been searched for and was found in the offering of a child which showed signs of sacrifice by the extraction of the heart. This showed that there is upcoming evidence on the actual happening of human sacrifice but this thesis also shows that nowadays not everyone is relying completely on the sources of the Conquistadores anymore. However some still do and should keep in mind that Spanish sources are not just to be taken for granted but should be read with great care and caution.Show less

Hierbij werd gebruik gemaakt van een aantal specifieke vragen, gebaseerd op criteria bepaald en gebruikt door Thera T. Smit bij een eerder onderzoek betreffende dit onderwerp. 37 Het verschil met het onderzoek van Smit is dat dit onderzoek zich toespitst op de muntslagen geïntroduceerd met Diocletianus’ monetaire hervorming tot aan de laatste Romeinse of Byzantijnse munten waarop architectuur is afgebeeld. Om deze reden en om te pogen meer inzicht te verkrijgen in de achterliggende redenen voor de keuze van bepaalde architectuur op een bepaald type munt, is er afgeweken van de opzet van Smit. Voor het onderzoek is ook gebruikt gemaakt van een tabel waarin gegevens, verkregen uit verschillende literaire bronnen, over een relatief groot aantal relevante objecten, zijn opgenomen. Een dergelijke werkwijze is noodzakelijk vanwege het aantal objecten waarmee men te maken heeft en omdat al snel duidelijk wordt dat zij zijn te verdelen in een aantal groepen waarin de individuele objecten een bepaald thema delen en onderling slechts qua vormgeving en detail van elkaar verschillen. Bovendien hebben de munten uit de betreffende periode een significant ander karakter dan munten uit eerder periodes, zoals die behandeld zijn door Smit. In tegenstelling tot eerdere muntuitgaven, zijn op uitgaven uit de periode van Diocletianus’ hervormingen en daarna vrijwel geen individueel te identificeren bouwwerken afgebeeld. Munten uit deze periodes laten veelal dezelfde “anonieme” bouwwerken zien, die overigens als algemeen model vaak wel zeer herkenbaar zijn zoals bij munten van het Wachtpost type.38 Het is echter niet altijd geheel duidelijk wat elk specifiek afgebeeld element precies moet voorstellen en vaak zijn er meerdere verklaringen mogelijk. De anonimiteit van de afgebeelde structuren en het thematische karakter van de munt-uitgaven behoren ook tot de redenen waarom de oorspronkelijk bepaalde methodes en technieken, gebaseerd om die van Smit, achteraf slechts beperkt toereikend blijken te zijn voor onderzoek van objecten uit de Laat Romeinse periode. Omdat deze observatie een van de belangrijkste is met betrekking tot architectonische muntbeelden uit de periode, is er voor gekozen de oorspronkelijke opzet niet te wijzigen. Een andere belangrijke observatie is dat relaties tussen architectonisch muntbeeld en Rijksbeleid, alsmede het belang van enkele terugkerende elementen op het muntbeeld van bepaalde muntseries, niet helder naar voren komen zonder munten, waarvan het muntbeeld niet van architectonische aard is, bij de analyse te betrekken. Het verdient daarom aanbeveling aan eenieder die zicht waagt aan een verdere verdieping in het onderwerp, in ieder geval alle typen munten uit een bepaalde serie, met én zonder architectuur op het muntbeeld, in beschouwing te nemen.Show less

Oude zekerheden stonden op de tocht en werden vervangen door andere. De stad had sterk geleden onder verschillende oorlogen en had haar status als hoofdstad verloren aan Constantinopel. Dit alles leidde tot een afname van de bevolking en de financiële draagkracht, met als gevolg een stedelijk landschap dat steeds verder aftakelde omdat de middelen voor onderhoud simpelweg niet meer voorhanden waren. Dit alles betekende ook een klap voor de identiteit van de bewoners van de eeuwige stad. Het leven ging echter door en men had zich te verzoenen met de nieuwe situatie. In deze zoektocht naar de bevestiging van eigenheid en identiteit van de Romeinse bevolking nam het stedelijke culturele erfgoed en de eeuwenoude geschiedenis van de stad een belangrijke rol in. Dit was alom vertegenwoordigd in het stedelijke landschap en de oude ambten en overheidsinstellingen en weerspiegelde een roemrijk verleden. Het uitgangspunt van dit onderzoek was het verkrijgen van inzicht in het gebruik van cultureel erfgoed, geschiedenis en een collectief cultureel geheugen in de vormgeving van een identiteit en zelfbeeld van de laat-antieke bewoners van Rome. Om dit inzicht te verkrijgen, werden uitingen van ‘’Erinnerungskultur’’, herinneringscultuur, onderzocht. Dit betreft een concept dat werd uitgewerkt in het boek: ‘’Das Kulturelle Gedächtnis’’ van Jan Assmann dat betrekking heeft op de rol van geschiedenis en herinnering op de vorming van identiteit. Binnen dit theoretisch kader werden het stedelijke landschap van Rome, de literatuur en de beeldende kunst van deze periode onder de loep genomen in de zoektocht naar uitingen van Erinnerungskultur. Dergelijke uitingen bleken alom vertegenwoordigd in deze categorieën. De omgang met het stedelijke landschap van de stad werd gekenmerkt door een sterke neiging tot restauratie en conservering van de oude situatie. Als afspiegeling van een roemrijk verleden werd het behoud van het stedelijke landschap op een lijn gesteld met het behoud van Rome’s oude luister. Identiteit en het culturele geheugen die deze vormgaf, werden onderhouden en versterkt door de conservering van de mnemotopen, de plaatsen van herinnering, die samen het stedelijke landschap vormden. Ook het gebruik van oude traditionele symbolen van Romeinse identiteit maakte een herleving door gedurende de late oudheid. De literatuur en beeldende kunst uit deze periode droegen op deze wijze sterk bij aan de verbreiding en instandhouding van het idee van het hebben van een gezamenlijk verleden en identiteit. Uit de bevindingen van het onderzoek kan worden opgemaakt dat gedurende de late oudheid de geschiedenis en het culturele erfgoed van Rome een belangrijke en actieve rol speelden in de vorming en bevestiging van identiteit en zelfbeeld van de Romeinen. Door middel van een actieve wisselwerking met dit erfgoed en deze geschiedenis waren ze in staat een identiteit vorm te geven die op verschillende manieren tot uitdrukking kwam. Deze uitingen, zoals de zorg voor het stedelijke landschap, het in stand houden van tradities en het gebruik van een specifiek Romeinse beeldtaal,waren niet enkel uitingen van deze identiteit maar functioneerden ook als vormende krachten achter deze identiteit. Het zijn getuigenissen van het verleden die herinneringen aan dit verleden oproepen en op die manier functioneren als drijvende krachten bij het tot stand komen van een collectieve culturele identiteit en geheugen binnen de Romeinse samenleving.Show less

An answer to the measurement problem is part of the interpretation and consequently the problem has frequently been discussed. Some however do not see a measurement problem at all and hence the measurement problem problem was born: Does the measurement problem exist at all? Belavkin acknowledges a problem and has described a way to solve it in a difficult paper in 2007 (see [1]). His theory is not widely known, probably due to the complexity of his paper. Therefore it seems important to explain Belavkin’s framework in the most simple way and applied to the most simple examples to help it become more well-known and understood. Goal of this thesis is to formulate Belavkin’s framework in an easy way. In addition we try to understand several much used models in the quantum theory using his framework. This thesis is not an attempt to reconstruct or simplify the whole theory of Belavkin, only the discrete time and not the continuous time part. At the same time this is not a literature review of other ways to solve the measurement problem. The thesis has the following structure. The first section gives our view on the measurement problem. That gives directly our take on the measurement problem problem. Belavkin’s framework as we will use it in this thesis is constructed in the second section; it is used then in section 3 to give a simple but important application. The main part of the thesis is section 4 which shows that the master equation approach, often used in quantum optics, can be embedded in Belavkin’s theory. The constructive way we do this gives us machinery to give a Belavkin-type solution to the problem of modeling a Geiger counter.Show less

One therefore could conclude that the...Show moreIn elementary functional analysis, one is taught that all normed vector spaces of given finite dimension over the reals or the complex numbers are isomorphic. One therefore could conclude that the theory of finite-dimensional vector spaces is trivial and not worth investigating. In this bachelor thesis, I will try to convince the reader that this is not the case. For instance, when investigating general Banach spaces one comes upon the field of local theory. This research area studies finite-dimensional normed spaces and the relation between a Banach space and its finite-dimensional subspaces. We will delve into a small part of this theory by introducing the BanachMazur distance, a fundamental tool when studying finite-dimensional normed spaces. Methods developed in the study of this distance have helped answer several longstanding questions about Banach spaces, and are used in other areas such as operator theory and harmonic analysis [Tomczak-Jaegermann 1989, p. x,xi]. The Banach-Mazur distance defines a metric on a set of equivalence classes of normed spaces, thereby defining the ’space of spaces’ from the title of this thesis. We can then ask ourselves several questions about this space, amongst which whether the space is bounded and compact. The first questions leads to the theorem of John (1948), which gives an upper bound for the diameter of this space. The problem of determining the quality of this upper bound was left open for some time, until it was solved in 1981 by Gluskin. His proof uses an interesting measure-theoretic approach which has since then been used in several other results. This theorem is the main piece of this thesis, and we will work out in more detail his short but very technical proof [Gluskin 1981]. In the paragraph following this introduction, we introduce the Banach-Mazur distance as a way of measuring how different two norms on isomorphic vector spaces are. We explore some of the properties of this distance. Using this distance, we can define a metric on the set of equivalence classes of n-dimensional (n ∈ N) normed spaces over the reals, and in the third section we go on to explore some of the properties of this metric space. In the fourth paragraph, we introduce the theorem of Gluskin to which we alluded previously, and go on to prove it, using the results from two appendices. We conclude with a paragraph stating some additional results using the same technique as Gluskin’s proofShow less
