Een Gr¨obnerbasis van een ideaal in een polynoomring is een stel voortbrengers met fijne algoritmische eigenschappen. Met behulp van een Gr¨obnerbasis kunnen veel problemen eenvoudig worden opgelost. We noemen het oplossen van een stelsel polynomiale vergelijkingen, het bepalen of een polynoom in een ideaal ligt en het bepalen of twee idealen gelijk zijn. Zie [8] of [11] voor meer toepassingen. Al deze problemen hebben een hoge algoritmische complexiteit. Bijvoorbeeld, zelfs als we ons beperken tot polynomen in 4 variabelen is het ideaallidmaatschapsprobleem (bepalen of een polynoom in een gegeven ideaal ligt) NP-moeilijk, wat betekent dat ieder NP-compleet probleem in polynomiale tijd te reduceren is tot dit probleem [24]. Het volgt meteen dat de constructie van een Gr¨obnerbasis uit een willekeurig stel voortbrengers van een ideaal niet eenvoudig kan zijn. Een algoritme dat deze constructie uitvoert is gegeven door Buchberger, en het is naar hem genoemd. Het principe van dit algoritme is om net zolang voortbrengers van het ideaal te blijven toevoegen totdat we een Gr¨obnerbasis hebben. Buchbergers algoritme termineert altijd, maar het bewijs daarvan is niet constructief. Daarom is het onbekend hoelang het algoritme bezig is, oftewel wat de complexiteit ervan is. Hier is veel onderzoek naar gedaan, maar sluitende onder- en bovengrenzen zijn er niet. Naast Buchbergers algoritme zijn er andere algoritmes die Gr¨obnerbases construeren [19, 28]. Deze zijn echter van meer theoretisch belang en in de praktijk werkt Buchbergers algoritme het beste. We gaan hier in deze scriptie niet verder op in. We beginnen deze scriptie met een behandeling van de onderliggende theorie. We defini¨eren Gr¨obnerbases, voeren Buchbergers algoritme in en formuleren de complexiteitsvragen. We eindigen dit hoofdstuk met een voorbeeld. De meeste stellingen bewijzen we niet: we verwijzen vaak naar het boek van Cox, Little en O’Shea [11]. De eerste twee hoofdstukken van dat boek zijn ook heel geschikt als een grondigere inleiding in Gr¨obnerbases dan we hier geven. In hoofdstuk 2 geven we ondergrenzen voor de complexiteit. We laten zien dat de grootte van een Gr¨obnerbasis dubbelexponentieel kan groeien in het aantal variabelen in de polynoomring. Aan de andere kant is er altijd een Gr¨obnerbasis met grootte begrensd door een vergelijkbare bovengrens: dat bewijzen we in hoofdstuk 3. Het is onbekend of deze bovengrens ook geldt voor de complexiteit van Buchbergers algoritme. In hoofdstuk 4, het belangrijkste deel van deze scriptie, leiden we een nieuwe bovengrens voor die complexiteit af, in termen van de Ackermannfunctie. We gebruiken daarbij alleen combinatorische argumenten. Tot dusver waren er vrijwel alleen bovengrenzen bekend onder beperkingen op de invoer (zoals het aantal variabelen of de gebruikte monoomordening), maar onze grens geldt algemeen. Kort geleden ontdekten we dat dit resultaat niet geheel nieuw is: vergelijkbare grenzen worden afgeleid in [13]. Toch zullen we op bladzijde 25 zien dat onze grenzen een nuttige toevoeging vormen. Het laatste hoofdstuk behandelt enkele onderwerpen uit de literatuur rond Buchbergers algoritme en de complexiteit daarvan. We bespreken aanpassingen van het algoritme die de complexiteit verlagen. Ook geven we complexiteitsgrenzen wanneer het aantal variabelen in de polynoomring klein is. Ten slotte bekijken we de invloed van monoomordeningen op het algoritme, en hoe we daar gebruik van kunnen maken. To get fully acquainted with Voronoi diagrams, Delaunay triangulations and the relationship between the two. To investigate a computational side of these tessellations and an application in astronomy in the form of modeling the Cosmic Web. Aims. First of all, to present and understand Brown’s algorithm, its tools, benefits and drawbacks. Secondly, to familiarize ourselves with modern views on and models of the Cosmic Web, and one of the new interesting tools used, namely the Delaunay Tessellation Field Estimator (DTFE). In particular, we are interested in accessing the quality of its reconstructions quantitatively. Methods. Obvious key concepts are Voronoi diagrams and Delaunay triangulations. For the computational component inversion and complexity analysis are of importance. For the astronomical component, various sampling methods and Fourier transforms come into play. Results. It seems that Brown’s algorithm has clear benefits in higher dimensional computations, but for two and three dimensions there may be better alternatives. Even though the DTFE reconstructions of the Cosmic Web appear to be visually satisfying, it appears that it is actually very sensitive to Poisson noise in the point distribution and in principle, minor effects may seriously distort the actual underlying continuous distribution. Greater care needs to be taken to access this further. There are many further research topics open here.Show less
This thesis describes the practices used in Saladoid and Taíno medicine with the use of historical accounts, specifically from Hispaniola, and uncovers other plants that were employed in medicinal...Show moreThis thesis describes the practices used in Saladoid and Taíno medicine with the use of historical accounts, specifically from Hispaniola, and uncovers other plants that were employed in medicinal context with the use of ethnoarchaeology. Taíno traditional medicine was in part practiced by shamans, working with hallucinogenic plants, and in part by housewives, preparing herbal remedies. The shamanistic medicine is described in detail by Spanish chroniclers and was a common feature of Taíno cultures. The plants used in this context were cohoba (Anadenanthera peregrina), a strong kind of tobacco (güeyo), and an energizing and hunger suppressing herb called digo, which may or may not have been coca (Erythroxylum coca). Hardly anything, however, is accounted on domestic medicine and, therefore, the last chapter applies ethnoarchaeology to modern herbal medicine in the Caribbean, in search of plants of which the use could date back to prehistory. Nine plants that were used by the Ostionoid and Saladoid peoples and are currently employed as medicine in the Caribbean are studied. These are: West Indian elm (Guazuma ulmifolica), monkey pistol (Hura Crepitans), cf. soursop (Annona muricata), cassava (Manihot esculenta), genip (Melicoccus bijugatus), red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle), maize (Zea mays), guava (Psidium guajava) and red pepper (Capsicum sp.). The last two have such a widespread and significant use that they were relatively certainly used as medicine as early as prehistory. Another discovery is the identification of a gum used for stomach problems by the Taíno, which was the gum of mesquite, (Prosopis juliflora).Show less

De bovenste zone toont hemelse figuren als Hemel (Caelum), Tijd (Saeculum) en Zonsopgang en Zonsondergang (Oriens en Occasus). Ook de winden, de wolken en twee Seizoenen zijn vertegenwoordigd. De onderste zone is het meest opmerkelijk en toont aquatische en maritieme personificaties. De rechterhelft is ernstig beschadigd en een aantal personificaties is niet meer of slechts nog gedeeltelijk zichtbaar. Verschillende wetenschappers hebben geprobeerd de betekenis van de voorstelling te achterhalen. Quet ziet in de voorstelling de Oikoumene, de grootsheid van de kosmos en het Romeinse Rijk. Blazquez identificeert het mozaïek als Mithraeïsch en Freijeiro, Alföldi en Rosenbaum zijn van mening dat het een allegorie van de Saeculum Aureum betreft. In dit onderzoek zijn alle personificaties individueel bestudeerd om meer inzicht te krijgen in de voorstelling. Hieruit is gebleken dat een aantal personificaties (Nubs, Nebula, Chaos, Tranquillitas en Navigia) uniek is. Andere figuren passen in de Grieks-Romeinse iconografie. De rechterhelft is ernstig beschadigd en een aantal personificaties is niet meer of slechts nog gedeeltelijk zichtbaar. De onderste zone toont Rivieren (Nilus en Euphrates), Havens (Portus en Pharus), Oceaan en Zee (Oceanus en Pontus), Overvloed (Copiae) en Zeevaart (Navigia). Waarschijnlijk hebben ook Aeternitas (Eeuwigheid), Bythos (Zeediepte), de seizoenen Winter en Lente (Hiems en Ver) onderdeel uitgemaakt van de voorstelling. De betekenis die uit het beschadigde mozaïek te herleiden is heeft betrekking op de kosmische orde die gunstige omstandigheden creëert voor vruchten en overvloed voortkomend uit voorspoedige scheepvaart. De twee fragmentarische figuren rechts onderin de voorstelling verhinderen een volledige interpretatie. Toekomstig onderzoek zal zich moeten richten op de identificatie van deze figuren.Show less

Het onderzoek was gebaseerd op literatuuronderzoek. De mogelijke relaties worden aangetoond met behulp van een aantal theoretische modellen, waaronder Peer Polity Interaction en het Core-Periphery model. De oude visie van hiërarchische relaties wordt in twijfel getrokken door nieuwe ideeën, waarvan heterarchie de voornaamste is. Er blijken meerdere soorten relaties aanwezig geweest te zijn (politieke, sociale, economische en ideologische), welke zich op meerdere niveaus afspeelden doch niet altijd in dezelfde mate. Er blijken nog steeds voldoende argumenten te zijn om hier nog meer onderzoek naar te doen.Show less

Maehara. In “Distances in a rigid unit-distance graph in the plane”1 he proved that the distances that occur between vertices in planar rigid unit-distance graphs are precisely the positive real algebraic numbers. A unit-distance graph is a framework of equal length bars which are connected in a flexible way at their endpoints. Such a framework is called rigid if it cannot be deformed without changing the length of the bars. There is also a stronger notion of rigidity which is called infinitesimal rigidity. This stronger notion asks that the framework cannot even be deformed infinitesimally without an infinitesimal change of the lengths of the bars. The picture on this page shows an example of a framework which is rigid but not infinitesimally rigid. The point with the arrows, cannot really move relative to the rest of the construction, although you can do this infinitesimally in the direction indicated by the arrows. A yet unanswered question was whether Maehara’s result also holds for infinitesimally rigid frameworks. It turned out to be true even with this stronger notion of rigidity. I will prove this in my thesis by showing that Maehara’s construction is infinitesimally rigid in most cases and give a different construction for the cases where Maehara’s construction isn’t infinitesimally rigid.Show less

Recently, however, progress has been made in the application of number theory to dynamics. This text seeks to elucidate a small bit of this progress. The focus will be on the special case of discrete dynamical systems, which consist of a set X associated with a map φ : X → X. As in this text we will mainly consider X = P n (Q), the first section serves as an introduction to projective geometry. To provide the reader with some intuition, it starts out with P 1 (C) and eventually switches attention to P n (Q). The second section introduces the basic notions of discrete dynamics. In the third section, ‘height functions’ are defined. These are functions of the form h : P n (Q) → R, and they serve as the main tool in applying number theory to dynamics. As we restrict attention to projective spaces over Q, their definitions can remain quite simple; when working over an arbitrary number field K, one runs into the problem that the ring of integers of K may not be a principal ideal domain, making the definition of h substantially more complicated. For this, refer to [1]. After having defined them, some important properties of the height functions are derived. Section 4 then utilizes these properties to quickly derive some interesting theorems relating arithmetic to discrete dynamical systems.Show less

Kaper published an article named Semistrong Pulse Interactions in a Class of Coupled Reaction-Diffusion Equations. In this article blow-up behavior was found in simulations of two modified Gierer-Meinhardt systems. In this thesis this behavior in both of these systems is analyzed. First we will use rescalings to construct explicit first order expressions for the blow-up solutions. These theoretical results are illustrated by simulations.Show less
