Aguas Buenas is situated in the Chontales province, Central Nicaragua, where there is not much archaeological research done. Linguistic and ethno historical research shows that the province was a cultural complex area in pre-Columbian times. Aguas Buenas is the largest known site in this province and so far only studies in surveys. The aim of the thesis is trying to say something about the identity of the people who build the site and regional interaction. During the field season of 2012 pottery was the most found material. The ceramics were studied using a modal analysis. The following modes were analysed: pot shape, lip shape, diameter of the pot, firing colour, colour, slip, decoration, and surface finishing. These results are compared with previous studies from Chontales and the Pacific region of Nicaragua.Show less

Corinne Hofman. Show less

Show less

In relation to this assessment, the focus of this study is on the social identity of the musician and on the evolution of the stringed music instrument. Accordingly, a literature study has been conducted focusing on a selection of relevant artifacts encountered at the Royal Cemetery of Ur: 1) the stringed music instruments, 2) the cylinder seals, and 3) the artifacts with cuneiform texts. Complex Society and Music: One of the key socio-political developments, which occurred during the ED IIIa period (2600-2450 BCE), was that kingship became hereditary. As such the legitimacy of kingship towards the citizens, became of critical importance, especially during the transition of power, now from father to son. Therefore the palace ideology, consisting of a body of doctrines, had to be inculcated effectively in society, now more than ever. To achieve this, music would prove to come to the rescue. This, since the elite would select two arenas to fulfill their propaganda needs, one in the domain of the living, the palace, the other in the domain of the death, the (royal) cemetery. The Musician: Therefore the “gala” singer attended not only the royal banquets, at the palace, and plucked the lyre, as can be observed from the cylinder seals and the Standard of Ur. But she also performed during the funerary ritual of the deceased ruler, as can be observed from the contextual evidence, the skeletons of “Dumu-kisal” and her colleagues in relation to the harps and lyres, of the royal cemetery. The Music Instrument: A sumptuous variety of stringed music instruments has been skillfully retrieved by Woolley from the Royal Cemetery, which is testimony to the long evolutionary path these instruments have followed. The lyre is thought to have evolved out of the arched harp (+/- 3000 BCE), which itself is interpreted to have developed from the hunter’s bow. The number of strings increased from 3-5 during the Uruk period to 11-15 observed during the ED period, enhancing the tonal capacity of the instrument significantly.Show less

Show less

As client king for the Roman Empire in Judea it was his job to prepare the Judean people for future incorporation in the Roman Empire, for which he used the rebuilding of the Jewish Temple. To prove this was indeed the case I will investigate how Herod used the Hellenistic architectural style – favoured by the Romans – within the Temple Mount Complex while still adhering to the Jewish rules and regulations concerning their Temple. To be able to do so I will be looking at a number of different case studies from various time periods and from approximately the same region as the Jewish Temple and comparing them to Herod’s Temple. These case studies are the Ba’al Temple in Palmyra, Herod’s Caesarea Maritima, Gerasa and the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus. Each of these shall be discussed in some detail, as well as giving a detailed description of the Temple Complex itself. At this point the main similarities to the Temple Mount Complex shall be chosen from the case studies and put next to the information already gleaned from the Complex itself. This will show how Herod managed to maintain balance between the position of Judea and the future position it would hold within the Roman Empire.Show less

Show less

Show less

After establishing what an apulo-Corinthian helmet exactly is and which Type’s there are, I went on and found out that we can also order these helmets by Groups that were made by the same craftsman. After this I investigated the spreading, which very clearly pointed out Apulia was the region were these helmets originate from. Then I explained that to helmets with a known context were all from tombs, some very rich, some of them poorer than other graves of their time, but most of the tombs had the same objects within them; military equipment, metal vessels, Lucanian, Campanian and local pottery, and some had Attic pottery. In the conclusion I answered the research questions, Where, when and in which contexts do these helmets occur? And What is the meaning of this type helmet in these contexts and what does this meaning of the helmets say about the cultural character of Apulia between the end of the 6th and the end of the 4th century B.C.?Show less

On these ceramics Moche artists rendered models of varying depictions. So-called stirrup spout vessels are known to depict human portraits, types of foods, a great variety of daily chores like fishing or weaving, but also a wide range of sexual activities. This thesis studies the function and significance of this last category of depictions through an overview of scholarly interpretations concerning the Moche erotic ceramic assemblage. In the history of academic research biases and prejudiced views, like gender stereotypes and cultural taboos, are seen to have tainted views and ideas. Therefore, this thesis consciously incorporates archaeological theory and contemporary mindsets in its overview of academic interpretations.Show less

It discusses the birth of sexuality research as a topic of interest and also considers its development over time. To be able to properly conduct sexuality research it is important to know the problems one might encounter in doing so and find ways of dealing with these. Besides discussing issues such as the negative views of sex and sexuality, heteronormativity and the recognition of sexual imagery and related artefacts in the archaeological record, the case study of the ancient bathhouse Qusayr ‘Amra is discussed, placing this theoretical issue in a more concrete framework. The question asked here is to what extent we can archaeologically research sexuality for the Umayyad Period, by looking at the frescoes of Qusayr ‘Amra. Here, we find a number of frescoes of nude men and women, that offer the potential to try and answer questions about sexuality. We find here that there might very well be a sexual component to the frescoes of this desert castle, that we might be able to understand when they are placed in a context of a number of literary sources from this time period.Show less

Show less

To make this possible this thesis starts off with a global overview of the history of the collections of the Museum in Chapter 2. In Chapter 3 the Collection G.N.V. is briefly introduced to the reader, together with an overview of the people who played a main role within the formation of the Collection: the triangle Martinus Nijhoff, Johannes Verschoor and the Museum. One element the author wished to research is how this Collection came together between 1886 and 1896 and how it came into the hands of the museum, as is debated in Chapter 4. In this triangle the Museum bought the antiquities, through the guidance and mediations of Nijhoff, from the Dutchman Verschoor. Verschoor was a doctor who lived in Naples, where he purchased antiquities that came to his attention through individual collectors, art dealers and his customers. The antiques originate both from trade and direct from archaeological digs. Chapter 5 – in which the second element of the research will be accounted for – shows how the acquisition of the Collection G.N.V. would not be accepted into both the ethical framework, and the legislations, which Museums nowadays deal with. The biggest concern within the purchase of these objects, that would not be accepted today, is the lack of knowledge about the context and the ownership history of the objects. All of the above is considered in the last chapter, Chapter 6. An Appendix is added to illustrate the overview of the Collection G.N.V in a schematic way. Appendix I is a list of the 14 different acquisitions of the Collection, Appendix II serves to give a complete picture of the antiquities in the Collection G.N.V and Appendix III shows a list of the communication about the Collection in the Archive of the Museum.Show less

Show less
