These changes comprise a number of things: an overall decline of construction (both in number of buildings as well as overall quality), a retraction of the town to the acropolis or ‘upper town’ area, a decline in organization and planning of the town and an increase in reusing older materials. At Koroneia these changes take place as well, this is suggested by both the architectural finds and the analysis of the ceramic finds of the survey done at the site. The religious and public spaces on the acropolis are now joined and/or replaced by everyday life (domestic and industrial structures). Different construction methods are used during the Late Antique period, which can say something about the use and (social) value of the structure. The archaeological data for this thesis consist of several structural remains which are recorded both manually and digitally. The construction methods used allow for a general division of the walls and a probable distinction of outer and inner walls. Due to the layout, two different sets of spaces can be traced, which might suggest either two buildings, or two units within one building. However further research in the chronology of the walls and research with the help of techniques like GPR, will greatly enhance our ideas about the total layout and size of the structures and will allow us to make more detailed conclusions. For now it seems most likely that these architectural remains had a domestic function and comprises a single structure, although a division into smaller units cannot be ruled out at this point. The methods used for the data acquisition were not perfect, but done quite quickly. In order to enhance the amount, but more importantly the accuracy and usability of the data, a couple of suggestions are made. Namely, planning in advance what the data will be used for, taking the time to check the data before processing and make a clear organization of the tasks that are needed for the acquisition of the data.Show less

Dit wijdsverspreide Tunesische tafelwaar kan belangrijke inzichten verschaffen in de lokale(Laat-)Romeinse economie, terwijl juist deze laatste fase van distributie vrijwel niet wordt onderzocht. Deze studie naar de distributie van ARSW in Boeotië laat het potentieel zien van onderzoek naar de verspreiding van dit aardewerk op een lokale en regionale schaal. Naast een indicatie voor status en economische activiteit blijkt het aardewerk ook te kunnen worden gebruikt om het karakter van verschillende sites aan te duiden. De relatief strikte dateringen van verschillende vormen uit Hayes zijn typo-chronologie maken het mogelijk om naast de ruimtelijke distributie ook de chronologische ontwikkeling van de distributie van het aardewerk in verschillende regio's te onderzoeken. Dit resulteert in een aantal parallelle (chronologische/ruimtelijke) ontwikkeling, maar vooral in regionale verschillen die kenmerkend zijn voor de Laat-Romeinse periode in Griekenland.Show less

Dit onderzoek vormt een duidelijk overzicht van de sikkels en sikkelfragmenten die zijn aangetroffen in West-Friesland, en heeft bijgedragen aan een beter inzicht in dit object en de verspreiding ervan. Hieruit is gebleken dat het verspreidingspatroon afhankelijk is van twee factoren, namelijk de bewoning die zich in het noordoosten van West-Friesland concentreerde, en de onderzoeksintensiteit. Na onderzoek naar de verschillen en/of overeenkomsten uit het oorsprongsgebied en Denemarken, blijkt dat de interpretatie of betekenis van deze halvemaanvormige werktuigen anders is voor deze gemeenschappen, dan voor de gemeenschappen uit Nederland. Dit verschil in functie is te herleiden tot de verdeling in twee typen (A en B), de verspreiding hiervan en het feit dat ze beide van een andere vuursteensoort zijn vervaardigd. Daarnaast wordt door dit onderzoek bevestigd dat complete vuurstenen sikkels zelden tot nooit in nederzettingen worden aangetroffen; het zijn vaak losse vondsten die in de periferie van nederzettingen worden gevonden. Fragmenten die hergebruikt zijn komen wel veel voor in nederzettingscontext.Show less

Door de relatieve zeldzaamheid van Midden-Paleolithische...Show moreMidden-Paleolithische oppervlaktevondsten zijn de enige bron van activiteit van Neanderthalers gedurende het Pleistoceen in Noord-Brabant. Door de relatieve zeldzaamheid van Midden-Paleolithische vondsten in Nederland is het noodzakelijk om een heldere indruk te krijgen van de natuurlijke en antropogene processen die verantwoordelijk zijn voor het aantreffen van deze vindplaatsen. Delen van Noord-Brabant, met name de laaggelegen Roerdalslenk, worden gekenmerkt door de dekzandgebieden die afgezet zijn gedurende het Weichselien - ook nadat Neanderthalers actief waren in dit gebied. Tevens is onderzocht of er op basis van aanwezige kaarten, namelijk de geologische-, geomorfologische-, bodem- en hoogtekaart een indicatief model geconstrueerd kan worden om toekomstige Midden-Paleolithische vondsten te voorspellen en huidige vondsten te verklaren. Daarbij is ook gekeken of gedrag van Neanderthalers invloed had op deze vondstverspreiding. Hoewel Midden-Paleolithische artefacten worden aangetroffen in de dekzandgebieden van de Roerdalslenk waar dit door recente sedimentatie niet verwacht werd, blijkt dat deze vondsten verklaard kunnen worden door aanwezige geomorfologische factoren. Vooral de aanwezigheid van beekdalen die zich diep hebben ingesneden in de recentere afzettingen, verhoogt de kans op Midden-Paleolithische vindplaatsen significant. Buiten de dekzandgebieden komen tevens Midden-Paleolithische vondsten voor op Holocene oppervlakten, maar ook deze vondsten kunnen verklaard worden door de aanwezigheid van plaatselijke erosie – naast beekdalen ook rivierdalen en terrassen, dekzandreliëf en antropogene activiteit. Uiteindelijk konden vrijwel alle vondsten binnen het model verklaard worden aan de hand van de geologische-, geomorfologische- en reliëfkaart, die gecombineerd zijn tot een gecombineerde indicatieve kaart van Noord-Brabant. De bodemkaart werd ook getoetst op voorspellingswaarde, maar bleek zoals verwacht niet voldoende indicatief te zijn voor Midden-Paleolithische vondsten. Slechts 7 van de 63 vondsten konden niet verklaard worden aan de hand van het gecombineerde indicatieve model. Van deze outliers bevonden zich 5 vlak naast voorspellende factoren, dat toegerekend wordt aan onnauwkeurige coördinaatplaatsbepaling. Twee van de vindplaatsen die niet verklaard kunnen worden, lagen aan de rand van de Peelhorst waar plaatselijk mogelijk een oude Pleistocene afzetting aanwezig is die niet terugkomt op de geologische overzichtskaart door de zeer grote schaal van deze kaart. Aangezien alle vondsten verklaard konden worden door natuurlijke factoren, was gedragsreconstructie onmogelijk.Show less

The results turned out to be legitimately sufficient due to the relatively broad preserved archaeological record (Gamble et al. 2004, 244-247). Nevertheless not all parts of the Palaeolithic Europe have been well investigated like Germany, France and the Iberian Peninsula. This BA thesis gives an insight in the Upper Palaeolithic hunter and gatherer societies of the Northwestern part of the Balkan, including Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina, during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), dating from 26.5ka to approximately 19ka calendar years ago. The primary research will discuss the hypothesis whether the latter named regions were a possible refugium for hunter and gatherer communities from north and central Europe. An inventory of Upper Palaeolithic sites located in the Northwestern Balkan region, provived a set of data including the faunal remains, the lithic industries and the stratigraphical sequences. The outcome resulted in a divided conclusion, on the one hand stating that all 7 sites included in the inventory yielded traces of hominid occupation corresponding with a frequently occupated Balkan region during the entire Last Glacial Maximum. The inventory data on the other hand, did not prove the presence or origin from Central European hominids. Whereas the traces of occupation could have also been from indigenous localities. More specialistic research focused on genetic DNA shall reveal these ambiguities in the future.Show less

These lemma’s and drawings...Show moreIn 2002 and 2010 boxes were discovered in the archives of the Ethnology Museum in Leiden. These boxes contained around 7600 lemma’s and numerous books with drawings. These lemma’s and drawings combined make up the unfinished work of two of the Penard brothers. These two, out of four, brothers lived in Suriname and did research into the Kari’na Amerindian society in the coastal area of Suriname. The emphasis of their research was into the cosmovision and worldview of the Kari’na, with which they delivered astonishing work in documenting the cosmovision and belief system of the Kari’na. The Penard manuscript would be their biggest publication, an encyclopedia of the Caribbean, if not for the timely demise of two of the Penard brothers. The Penard manuscript has a great potential for the archaeology of Suriname and the archaeology of the Caribbean in general. Due to the combination of the drawings and the lemma’s, we possess a great body of information about the cosmological belief system of the Kari’na. This provides us with a greater knowledge of the iconographic culture of the Kari’na. And since iconographic material is an important part of the material culture of the Kari’na, it can provide us with information about the trade and migration in the Caribbean. But since my research was meant as a preliminary research into the potential of the Penard manuscript, further research has to be conducted to assess the true value of the manuscript.Show less

An...Show moreThe research examines Neanderthal fossil sites containing more than one individual and investigates the existence of Neanderthal mortuary spaces, a place associated with death, among them. An overview of Neanderthal fossil sites with respect to the number of individuals indicates that almost 50% contains more than one individuals. The ones with more than five individuals are studied in detail concerning the main features of mortuary space: multiple burial, spatial organization and temporal restriction. At least three sites (La Ferrassie, Shanidar and Amud) appear to be mortuary spaces. On these sites multiple burial and spatial organization are evident but temporal restriction is hard to detect in the existing documentation. No general patterns were detected but traditions within sites are clear. Local natural elements are highly involved in burial structures and in spatial organization, indicating creative landscape use, which could account for the locality of traditions. The existence of mortuary space suggests modernity in Neanderthals behaviour. It also implies that mortuary behaviour emerged gradually and existed in elaborate ways in other species than ours.Show less

Het land wordt geprezen om haar stabiele democratie en economische welvaart. Binnen het Afrikaanse perspectief wordt Botswana gezien als een koploper en als een grote uitzondering op het gebied van democratisch succes (du Toit, 1995: 71). Het land is andere buurlanden ver vooruit. Volgens de auteur Diamond is er een nieuwe golf van democratisering in Afrika mogelijk wanneer andere landen het voorbeeld van Botswana volgen (1999: 270). Deze auteur stelt dat het land uitblinkt op het gebied van competente politieke leiding (1999: 270). Botswana is een uitzonderlijke casus te noemen, omdat er in andere Afrikaanse landen veelal geen sprake is van democratie en politieke vrijheden. Dit is ook het geval in de buurlanden van Botswana. In vrijwel de hele regio is er een gebrek aan naleving van wetten en schending van bepaalde vrijheden en rechten van de bevolking. Daarnaast is er over het algemeen sprake van corruptie, armoede en inkomensongelijkheid in de Sub-Sahara (Freedom House, 2007). In deze landen lijkt de kans op democratie niet erg waarschijnlijk. Botswana lijkt echter een uitzondering op de regel te zijn. De vraag die rijst is hoe democratisch het land nou echt te noemen is. Om dit te onderzoeken wordt Botswana getoetst aan de hand van bestaande theorieën over democratie. In de scriptie richt ik me op het beantwoorden van de volgende vraag: Hoe kunnen we verklaren dat Botswana democratisch is gebleven ondanks ongunstige voorwaarden?Show less

This was done in order to achieve the research goal and to answer the research questions. The main goal was to reach the most objective view possible, concerning the origins, history and use, on the catacombs and catacomb research. The research performed on the catacombs in the last 450 years was divided into two main categories. The first concerns all the research performed in the 17th, 18th, 19th and the major part of the 20th century, differing from the second methodological category. These differences are mainly caused by the fact that those earlier researchers did not have the technological means to perform certain investigations, in contradiction with the later researchers who did. Another difference between the two categories is the presence or absence of religious influences. Especially the authors of the early works, some of them written in the time of the Counter Reformation, were professing Christians with close connections with the Catholic Church. Their own believes and religiously founded motivation have distorted their work. Whether the later researchers are religious or not is not clear, but if so, then it has not influenced their work as none of them mention religion. The fact that Jewish catacombs are also a subject of research nowadays indicates that the Catacomb Archaeology has changed (Rutgers et al. 2005, Rutgers et al. 2007). Instead of only focussing on the remains of early Christianity, the horizon has broadened. This also shows through other recent works, the catacombs offer more possibilities than previously thought and can serve both as subject and object of research.Show less

Sometimes, a subset of reactions is also called a...Show moreThe full metabolic network of an organism is the collection of all chemical reactions which may occur in and between the cells of the organism. Sometimes, a subset of reactions is also called a metabolic network (e.g. glycolysis). Due to the mapping of the genome of many organisms, there are now many metabolic networks to be studied. Metabolic pathway analysis consists of describing the complete set of possible pathways in a metabolic network. This set is a convex cone which may be described (generated) by a finite set of vectors (pathways). In the literature, different sets of generating vectors exist, the two most frequently used are the extreme pathways and the elementary modes. Chapter 1 covers the description of the general model used in metabolic network analysis. In Chapter 2 we describe the different sets of generating vectors and theirs properties. Motivation is given for choosing elementary modes over extreme pathways as a set of generating vectors. In Chapter 3 we describe the algorithm for calculating elementary modes and in Chapter 4 a method for calculating elementary modes through subdivision of the network is given. The main goal of the thesis was to try to find a better method to compute the extreme pathways of a large metabolic network by subdividing the network, as was done in [7]. Naturally, this was changed to computing elementary modes as well. The goals of the thesis gradually changed as I became more immersed in the subject matter. Initially, the idea was to expand the concept of an extreme pathway, by allowing reversible reactions. The set of extreme pathways is unique. Extreme pathways are said to be conically independent (I discovered later on that this is not always the case), so we tried to expand the definition using this property. This turned out to be a dead end, as a generating set of conically independent vectors is not always unique. By setting a new goal, namely studying the different sets of generating vectors and their differences, it became clear that the elementary modes were much more useful in a system without restrictions on the reversible reactions.Show less

The cube and the octahedron are dual to each other: every face on the cube corresponds to a vertex on the octahedron and vice versa. The same holds for the dodecahedron and the icosahedron, while the tetrahedron is its own dual. Thus, up to duality, there are only three types: the tetrahedron, which consists of four triangles; the cube, which consists of six squares; and the dodecahedron, which consists of twelve pentagons. They share the property that each vertex lies on three different faces, but the number of vertices on each faces grows. A natural question now arises: can we not continue this trend and create more platonic solids?Show less

In fact, it is common for data mining methods to only work well on nominal data with little different values. We build the theory to fill this gap for data from arbitrary uncountable sets and introduce an efficient method to mine data, without the usual discretization as a pre-processing step. It is shown that discretization is not needed in order to make use of the MDL principle.Show less

This would lead to an attempt to also classify a closely...Show moreIn 1934, the famous mathematician Hans Julius Zassenhaus classified the sharply triply transitive permutation groups in his dissertation. This would lead to an attempt to also classify a closely related class of doubly transitive permutation groups, these days known as Zassenhaus groups. Michio Suzuki, Walter Feit and Noburu Ito made the most important contributions to this endeavour. Eventually, Michio Suzuki would finish this classification in 1962. In his pursuit for this classification, Suzuki discovered a new family of finite simple groups. Nowadays, these groups are known as the Suzuki groups and are often denoted as Suz(22n+1). Suzuki defined his groups as a subgroup of the matrix group of invertibele 4×4 matrices over F, with F a well chosen field. He defined his groups by giving three generators. As these generators were matrices the calculations involved to prove that Suz(22n+1) is a Zassenhaus group are not very insightfull. Another way to construct these groups is by means of Lie Algebras. This contruction however would require too much machinery for our purposes. In 2009, Robert Wilson published a new construction of the Suzuki groups which is rather elementary, and in his own words: “in time it will come to be regarded as the standard construction. ” In this bachelor thesis I will review the different Zassenhaus groups with a special emphasis on the Suzuki groups using Wilson’s construction.Show less

Ik ga in deze scriptie bekijken hoe twee lichamen zich om elkaar heen bewegen, en hoe een derde massa zich daarin kan begeven zodat hij stationair is. For instance, the Riemann–Roch theorem for Riemann surfaces has an analogue for graphs, and the theory of (principal) divisors can also be applied to graphs. In that fashion, gonality has been defined for graphs as well. It turns out that the gonality of a graph is also related to winning strategies in certain chip-firing games on graphs, which have been studied since the 1980s. In this thesis, the most important results and techniques are constructed in Section 3, most notably lower and upper bounds on the gonality. Some examples of graphs and their gonalities can be found in Section 4. Finally we will conduct an in-depth analysis of an algorithm for computing the reduced divisor in Section 5. We also briefly discuss algorithms for other, related tasks, such as computing the rank of a divisor and computing the gonality of a graph. This thesis gives an overview of some of the recent developments in the area of graph gonality, aimed at undergraduates in their final year as well as graduate students in mathematics. Some prior knowledge of graph theory and group theory might be useful, but in general the text is accessible for anyone with a general mathematical background (naive set theory, linear algebra).Show less

Riesz spaces are real vector spaces equipped with a partial order. Under this partial order the Riesz space must satisfy some axioms, including the axiom that it is a lattice. In the first chapter the concept of a lattice and a Riesz space will be introduced and some examples will be given. Also some general definitions and properties will be given. Furthermore two partial orders on R n, the pointwise and the lexicographical order, will be introduced. In the second chapter homomorphisms between Riesz spaces will be discussed. In chapter three we will use these homomorphisms to understand the structure of finite dimensional Riesz spaces. Here we will prove that each finite dimensional Riesz space E can be built up as the direct sum Ln j=1 Ij of a finite number of Riesz spaces, where every Ij can be constructed out of a lower dimensional Riesz space, using a variant of the lexicographical order. In the last chapter we will use these results to find the automorphism groups of finite dimensional Riesz spaces.Show less
De omvang van het botassemblage van de opgraving aan de Roerkade biedt mogelijkheden tot het verkrijgen van nieuwe perspectieven met betrekking tot het voedselgebruik in de middeleeuwse stad...Show moreDe omvang van het botassemblage van de opgraving aan de Roerkade biedt mogelijkheden tot het verkrijgen van nieuwe perspectieven met betrekking tot het voedselgebruik in de middeleeuwse stad Roermond. In de stadskern heeft er qua hoeveelheid dierlijke resten geen vergelijkbare opgraving plaatsgevonden. De eerste, ruwe dateringen aan de hand van het aardewerk lopen van ongeveer 1200 tot 1800 n.Chr. Dit is een periode van 600 jaar, waarin er voor de stad en diens omgeving veel veranderd. Er is onderzoek verricht naar de aanwezige diersoorten binnen het assemblage en met welk doel de dieren gehouden dan wel gevangen werden. De dierlijke resten zijn bestudeerd om te kunnen bepalen of het afval van ambachtswerkzaamheden of huishoudens vertegenwoordigd. Voedselresten afkomstig uit een aantal gesloten contexten aangetroffen op het terrein bieden de mogelijkheid onderzoek te verrichten naar de sociale status en klassenverschillen tussen bewoners van het terrein door de eeuwen heen.Show less

Projectieve vlakken komen voor in de projectieve meetkunde, en zijn een speciaal (2-dimensionaal) geval van de objecten, genaamd projectieve ruimtes, die daar bestudeerd worden. Het bijzondere van projectieve vlakken is dat enkele eigenschappen die gelden in alle hoger-dimensionale projectieve ruimtes, zoals de Desargueseigenschap uit de stelling van Desargues, niet altijd meer gelden in de 2-dimensionale gevallen. Ondertussen hebben deze vlakken niet zo’n simpele structuur als 0- of 1-dimensionale projectieve ruimtes. Dit maakt het zeer interessant om projectieve vlakken te bestuderen. Het blijkt dat ieder projectief vlak een achterliggende algebra¨ısche structuur, een zogeheten vlakke ternaire ring, heeft, die veel zegt over bepaalde eigenschappen van het projectieve vlak; bijvoorbeeld of het vlak aan de Desargueseigenschap voldoet.
